Partner organisations
There are several charities, initiatives and non-government organisations that offer useful information on making developments sustainable. They may be able to help developers and communities to maximise the benefits of SuDS and green infrastructure.
Somerset Wildlife Trust (SWT) works to look after some of Somerset's most iconic landscapes and special wildlife. SWT restores, strengthens and connects habitats and green spaces on a landscape scale so nature can recover and thrive in the future. Example projects include Living Landscapes and Nature Recovery Networks.
Westcountry Rivers Trust is a charity dedicated to restoring and protecting rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal areas across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset for the benefit of people, wildlife and the local economy.
West Somerset Flood Group represents local communities working against flooding. They help communities to exchange information, act as a point of contact with flood risk management authorities, raise awareness of flooding and campaign for resources to address flooding.
Taunton was designated a Garden Town in 2017. The vision is to create a a place where an outstanding natural environment, thriving economy and inspiring culture, contribute to an exceptional quality of life and well-being.
The RSPB is the largest nature conservation charity in the country. The RSPB has worked with developers in a number of locations to help design wildlife-friendly developments, for example Kingsbrook, Aylesbury.
The WWT is a conservation charity founded to protect wetlands for wildlife and people. WWT work to incorporate wetlands into the community. Their 'SuDS for Schools' project involved creating wetland SuDS in schools, to help manage known flooding and pollution issues. The wetland SuDS also allow children to play and to learn outdoors about water and wildlife.
